Jose Ucar is a masterful public speaking coach whose energy is as infectious as his expertise is deep. In this interview, we dive into his fascinating journey from international business specialist to becoming the go-to presentation and public speaking coach for global companies and CEOs. What follows is an illuminating conversation about the art of public speaking, the transformative power of effective communication, and Speaking with Impact, his signature teaching method.
Jose, your journey from international business to becoming a speaking coach is fascinating. What sparked that transition?
You know what’s interesting? I discovered that success in business isn’t just about great ideas – it’s about how you communicate them. Through my years working internationally, I saw brilliant concepts fall flat simply because they weren’t presented effectively. That revelation became my calling. I realized I could help people bridge that gap between having a great idea and delivering it with impact.
Your Speaking with Impact method sounds intriguing. What makes it different?
The beauty of this approach is that it blends the precision of NLP with real-world business experience. Think of it like a master chef combining different ingredients, we take proven communication techniques, add cultural intelligence from my global experience, and mix in strategies that I’ve personally tested on numerous stages. It’s not just theory; it’s battle-tested knowledge.
Your clients seem to range from SEAT executives to NHS leaders – how do you adapt your coaching style to such different audiences?
My approach is really about finding what makes each client unique. With SEAT & Cupra, for example, we focused on helping executives deliver impactful speeches while staying authentic to who they are. With NHS leaders, it was more about building resilience and practical communication skills they could apply in high-pressure situations. I believe the key is customization, whether I’m working face-to-face or virtually, each session is tailored to what that specific group or individual needs to achieve.
I’ve heard a lot about your ‘provocative coaching’ style, can you tell us more about how that works in practice?
I believe real growth happens outside our comfort zones. When I worked with DAF Trucks, for instance, I used role-playing exercises, which most people initially dread, but made them practical and relevant to their actual work challenges. It’s about creating an environment where people feel safe to experiment and learn from each other. Even when pushing boundaries, I maintain high energy and ensure everyone stays engaged. This approach has worked well across different settings, from corporate training to hosting events like TEDxSheffield, where bringing energy and insight helps create those breakthrough moments.
Many professionals worry about their accent holding them back. How do you help them turn this perceived challenge into a strength?”
I’m really passionate about this topic because I see it differently than most coaches. Rather than trying to eliminate accents, I help people embrace them as part of their unique personal brand. You know, some of my most successful clients initially saw their accent as a barrier, but we worked together to build their confidence and develop a communication style that showcases their international experience as an asset. It’s not about changing who you are, it’s about learning to deliver your message clearly and confidently while letting your authentic voice shine through.
Having been both a TEDx speaker and host, how does that experience shape your coaching?
There’s nothing quite like standing on that red dot! When I tell my clients I understand their nerves, they know it’s not just empty words. I’ve felt that pressure, managed those butterflies, and learned how to channel that energy into powerful delivery. It allows me to give real, practical guidance rather than textbook advice.
For someone facing a make-or-break presentation, what’s your golden rule?
Here’s the thing, and I tell this to every client, the most powerful presentations aren’t just well-rehearsed speeches; they’re conversations that matter. Whether you’re in front of investors or leading a team meeting, success comes from finding that sweet spot between professional expertise and personal authenticity. It’s about making every word count while staying true to who you are.
